Physical Therapy and Myofascial Release FAQ

What should I bring to my first physical therapy appointment?

The items necessary for the first visit are a prescription from your doctor as well as your insurance card. If you are covered by no fault or workers compensation you will also need to bring a case # and contact information of a case worker.

What should I wear to my physical therapy appointment?

Loose clothing should be worn or brought to your PT appointment to allow access by the physical therapist to the area of complaint.

What will take place during my first visit, and how long will it take?

The first session will consist of an initial evaluation, asking questions about the history of your complaint, followed by a physical examination, and then treatment. This will generally be the longest session because of he evaluation aspect and the necessary paperwork to fill out upon arrival. This session will last between 60 and 90 minutes. All subsequent sessions will last between 45 and 60 minutes.

How often will i need to come for treatment?

In general this is decided by your doctor and written on the prescription. It can be variable though, sometimes the duration of the prescription is not required for restoration of health, and other times more treatment is necessary. It is a decision that the patient should have a large part in making and can be discussed with the treating therapist. Sometimes the insurance coverage will have a say in how benefits are used.

how does myofascial release work?

MFR was founded on the understanding that we all have the ability to heal ourselves It is primarily “gentle work” that consists of holding tissue in a stretch position for a prolonged period of time. While gentle in nature the work has the ability to yield “powerful results”. The more prepared you are to receive the treatment the better those results will be. What happens during a myofascial release session?

During the session it will be helpful to shift your awareness from your mind to your body. This “centering” will help quiet your mind and support the flow of healing energy. Centering may consist of focusing on a singular function, like breathing or feeling tension/lack of tension in a particular area of your body. Let yourself go to the best of your ability. When you “take the brakes off” and let go of resistance there is no limit to the power of your being.

what can i expect after a myofascial release session?

It is important to drink plenty of water in the hours following your session. MFR benefits have the potential to continue well after your session has ended.
